Chaplaincy

Who are School Chaplains?

School chaplains are in the prevention and rescue business. They're helping students and school communities find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to drug abuse, depression and suicide. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis and those who just need a friend. All have a passion to improve the lives of young people.

"They (Chaplains) actually are providing the glue which keeps school communities rolling. School chaplains and counsellors are in a unique position to help young people navigate the often choppy waters of adolescence. And for many kids, the emotional challenges of those years can affect their capacity to study, to learn and sometimes even to survive." former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

Chaplaincy supports young people in one of the most complex environments in our society - school. Today, there are over 1915 state schools with NSCA chaplains across the country. In 2011, Tasmania had chaplains serving in over 90 of its state schools. These chaplains provide a safe and supportive influence.

"Chaplaincy fills gaps you know need filling, but it also fills gaps you didn't know existed and creates opportunities you didn't know were there." Andy Bennett Manager of the Bridgewater and Southern Midlands Learning Federation and former principal of Dodges Ferry Primary School.
